Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson was a busy man in Paris, making a string of top saves to help the Reds claim a crucial 1-0 win at a frustrated Paris Saint-Germain in a Champions League Round of 16 first leg tie on Wednesday night.
Harvey Elliott took advantage of a moment’s lapse in concentration to steal the win for Liverpool, striking in the 87th minute to give the Reds a crucial advantage ahead of the return leg next week.
PSG controlled the game throughout and created chance after chance, yet were unable to find a way past the imperious Alisson who showed solid form to keep Liverpool in the tie with a string of saves.
Khvica Kvaratskhelia did have the ball in the back of the net after 20 minutes, getting on to a loose ball off Alisson’s clearance to curl past the Brazilian, only for VAR review to cancel the goal for offside.
PSG felt Ibrahima Konate should have gotten a card in whatever shade of colour after he brought down Barcola but the Liverpool man was adjudged to have committed no foul much to the PSG players’ frustration as the first half ended goalless.
The trend continued in the second half, with Alisson making more saves from a rampant PSG side that had not been involved in a goalless draw in 92 Champions League games heading into this one against the Premier League leaders.
Liverpool would take the lead against the run of play, though, in the closing stages through Elliott, just 37 seconds after coming on for Mo Salah.
The result gives Liverpool the upper-hand heading into the return leg at Anfield next week although, PSG cannot be ruled out going by their display in Paris.
