Carlos Alcaraz has put himself in position to reach the last four of the ATP Finals in Turin following a straight-set win over Andrey Rublev in his second group match at the season-ending competition.
The reigning French Open and Wimbledon champion had suffered a shock loss to Casper Ruud in his opening group match, but made sure there was no such repeat when he faced Rublev.
Alcaraz mentioned having to endure an upset stomach in the loss to Ruud, and had a chest complaint while playing Rublev although held his nerves to seal a 6-3 7-6 win on Wednesday.
The 21-year-old Spaniard must now defeat Alexander Zverev to stand a chance of reaching the semi-final stage in Turin, while Rublev must defeat Ruud in his final match and hope Zverev wins against Alcaraz on Friday.
