Third seed Carlos Alcaraz of Spain has claimed the Wimbledon grand slam title this year after beating second seed Novak Djokovic in straight sets of 6-2 6-2 7-6, putting his name among a rare set of grand slam champions.

Alcaraz came from behind to beat Djokovic in five sets in 2023, successfully defending the title with less drama this time around to claim a fourth career slam and a first Channel Slam – holding the French Open and Wimbledon titles in the same year.

The 21-year-old joins a group of five other players in history to have won the Channel Slam, with the likes of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Djokovic among the players to have previously achieved the feat.

Alcaraz’s win also makes him one of only two players in men’s singles history to win their first four grand slam finals appearance, Federer being the other player. And at just 21 years, he is on pace to match and even surpass the milestones of Djokovic, Federer, and Nadal.

Djokovic on his part remains on 25 career grand slam titles, which keeps him tied for most slams won in history across the sport alongside Margaret Court. Serena Williams is next on that list with 23 grand slam titles.

The result was also Djokovic’s second-most lopsided loss in his 37 grand slam final appearances. The 10 games the Serbian managed to win in the three sets betters only the seven games he won in his 6-0 6-2 7-5 loss to Nadal in the 2020 French Open final.final.

With three Slams done for the year, the US Open is now Djokovic’s next chance to own the record for most grand slam titles won while for Alcaraz, it’s another chance to further cement his name as a growing force in tennis.
