Bernardo Silva’s goal a minute from the end and Manuel Akanji’s sudden death spot kick earned Manchester City a 7-6 win on penalties over city rivals Manchester United in the FA Community Shield on Saturday.
A keenly contested derby saw no goals forthcoming from both sides for 80 minutes, then the match sparked to life as Alejandro Garnacho cut in from the flank to strike the Red Devils in front in the 82nd minute.
And just as Erik ten Hag’s men looked set to lift the Shield, City levelled the game through Silva, who got ahead of Facundo Pellestri to convert a fine Oscar Bobb cross from six yards out and send the game to penalties.
Silva looked set to go from hero to zero when he missed City’s first spot kick after international team-mate Bruno Fernades put United in front, only for debutant Savio to level at 3-3 after Jadon Sancho saw his spot kick saved by Ederson.
Veteran defender Jonny Evans blazed his penalty over the goal, leaving Akanji with the honour of winning the Shield for City, ending City’s run of three successive losses in the Community Shield.
