Equatorial Guinea have joined the list of countries that have qualified for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after Togo were beaten in their penultimate Group E qualifying match on Wednesday.
The Sparrowhawks needed to take all three points from their trip to already-eliminated Liberia to keep alive their hopes of reaching the finals in Morocco.
But it was the Lone Stars that got a 1-0 win in Monrovia thanks to a Mohammed Sangare penalty in the 83rd minute to dash Togo’s hopes and send Equatorial Guinea to the AFCON finals.
The result condemns Togo to a fourth consecutive absence from the AFCON finals, having last appeared at the 2017 tournament in Gabon.
Next up for Equatorial Guinea is a clash at home against already-qualified Algeria on Thursday followed by a trip to face the eliminated Togo on Sunday.
The Central Africans become the ninth team to book their place in Morocco after Algeria, Angola, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, DR Congo, Egypt and Senegal all secured their spots in the fourth round of qualifying.
